A realistic starting age
Readiness is less about perfect coordination and more about following simple instructions, taking turns and staying curious for a short session.
Ask how the batch groups children by age and experience. Share whether your child has played any ball or racket sport, without treating prior experience as a requirement.
Share the child’s age, previous experience and preferred weekends. Keep medical or other sensitive details out of the web form; discuss anything relevant directly with the club through an appropriate private channel.
What happens in a first class
The first class should make the paddle, ball and court feel familiar. Children may practise grip, ready position, contact and a simple movement pattern before playing points.
A good first session leaves room for repetition and small wins. Ask the coach what the current batch covers and how progress is adapted for different learners.
Rules children can learn gradually
Children do not need every scoring detail on day one. Start with the serve direction, letting the ball bounce, staying safe around others and respecting the kitchen line.
Add scoring only after they can start and continue a rally. Short explanations followed by a chance to try usually work better than a long lecture.
Coordination and confidence
Tracking a light ball, moving into position and controlling a paddle give children many small coordination challenges. Confidence comes from seeing one rally become two.
Keep claims realistic: coaching is a sports activity, not a treatment. Ask the coach how feedback is given and how children are encouraged without comparing them publicly.
Helping a hesitant child settle in
A new court, coach and group can be a lot at once. Tell the coach quietly that your child may need time, then let the first goal be joining one activity.
Avoid promising that they must love the class immediately. Ask whether parents may observe, how the coach introduces partners and how breaks are handled.
PLAY IN MOSHI
Turn the reading into a real game.
