Learn before the first rally

You do not need every tournament exception to start. Learn the diagonal serve, opening bounces and kitchen rule, then practise a short rally. Agree on the scoring format before the first serve.

Check the rulebook when details matter

These are beginner explanations of standard play, not a replacement for event rules. Adaptive formats, rally scoring and tournament procedures can differ. Use the current official reference and the rules announced by your organiser.

Questions, answered.

How many people play pickleball?

Singles uses two players and doubles uses four. Both use the same standard court.

How big is a pickleball court?

The marked court is 20 × 44 feet, approximately 6.10 × 13.41 metres. Extra movement space is needed beyond the lines.

Can I stand in the kitchen?

Yes. You can play a ball after it bounces there. You cannot volley while touching the kitchen or its line, or let volley momentum carry you in.

What is the two-bounce rule?

The serve must bounce before the receiver returns it, and that return must bounce before the serving team hits it.

What does 0–0–2 mean?

In traditional doubles, the numbers are the serving score, receiving score and server turn. The opening team gets one server turn, represented by 2.

Do I need to buy a paddle before trying pickleball?

No. Ask a venue about rental or borrowing first. Fit and comfort are easier to judge after trying the sport.
